President’s Message<\/h3>\n

I am hoping that everyone’s semester has gotten off to a good start. There is still time to pick up another course with a number of accelerated late start classes available. Visit\u00a0www.asnuntuck.edu<\/a>\u00a0to see what classes will fit your schedule.<\/p>\n

I am pleased to announce an exciting new partnership between ACC and Capital Workforce Partners (CWP).\u00a0 As the state’s regional Workforce\u00a0Development Board in North Central Connecticut, Capital Workforce Partners\u00a0helps individuals overcome barriers to employment and closes the gap between skills and business hiring needs.<\/p>\n

ACC has a long-standing relationship with CWP. Recently we were made aware that CWP was looking to relocate its Enfield Job Center. You may have already noticed work taking place in Freshwater Commons in anticipation of CWP\u2019s arrival.\u00a0 Beginning in mid-February, you will see members of their team moving into the space.\u00a0 As it stands now, this will be a short-term agreement between the two agencies, although we have already reached out to the BOR about making it a more permanent arrangement.<\/p>\n

Eileen Peltier, dean of workforce development and continuing education at Asnuntuck and Tunxis Community Colleges, traveled to Capitol Hill in December to represent the 12 Connecticut Community Colleges as part of a \u201cfly-in\u201d organized by Business Leaders United for Workforce Partnerships.<\/p>\n

Peltier joined Asnuntuck Community College instructor and small business owner Lisa Shelanskas for meetings with staff from the offices of Sens. Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, and Reps. Joe Courtney and Rosa DeLauro, to discuss the importance of modernizing federal financial aid for students, and to urge the expansion of funding for career and technical education through the Perkins Act.<\/p>\n

Dean Peltier will be taking another trip to D.C. in February.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Asnuntuck has added an additional sculpture to its campus. Named Gnomon, the sculpture is located in front of the new 27,000 square foot Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center, on Asnuntuck\u2019s Campus. ACC faculty member Adam Rivers co-presented\u00a0Media’s Role in Prevention<\/em>\u00a0for the Connecticut Association of Prevention Professionals. Rivers, a disc jockey for WACC 107.7 and KC 101, co-presented with Andrea Mashiak, Youth Counselor Enfield Youth Services and Mel Navin and Jamie Santiago, Enfield Youth Council Co-Chairs.<\/p>\n

The presenters offered an overview of the partnership formed between Enfield Youth Services Youth Council and Asnuntuck Community College’s (ACC) radio station 107.7 WACC. A PowerPoint presentation highlighted the multi-faceted approach that ACC\/EYS have created to broadcast prevention messages in the Enfield community. Members learned the structure and benefits of partnering with local media outlets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Their smiles and gratitude are priceless.\u00a0 Professor Samuel Irizarry has been fortunate to have had the opportunity of spending time with some of the poorest children in Guatemala during a summer and winter mission trip.\u00a0 Thousands of children received school supplies and gifts.\u00a0 For many children, it was the first gift they have ever received. \u00a0Also, hundreds of students received food during the 3 camps that were conducted during the winter trip. \u00a0The children were able to obtain gifts, school supplies, and food because caring and special people contributed to these trips.\u00a0 Dr. James Lombella, Dean Eileen Peltier, Julie Cotnoir, Prof. Teresa Foley, Prof. Amely Cross, Prof. Michelle Coach, Prof. Heidi Fitzgerald, Kim Quinn, and Katie O\u2019Connell made these trips possible.\u00a0 If you would like to be part of the \u201cMission 2018\u201d, please feel free to contact Prof. Samuel Irizarry at\u00a0sirizarry@asnuntuck.edu<\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

An agreement between Follett Bookstores and Connecticut\u2019s 12 community colleges is resulting in significant savings for students. Changes to the Follett contract last year were a result of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) President Mark Ojakian\u2019s desire to provide students an affordable option for textbooks. Asnuntuck Partners with French Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n

Associate Professor Joe Finckel and\u00a0 Associate Professor Amely Cross are partnering with Christine Hill and Stephanie Le Meleder, two professors from the Institute of Technology of Lannion, France. They created 4 modules for these classes where students from Asnuntuck will be partnering with students in Lannion on a health\/science project. The students will be set-up in groups of 4-5.\u00a0 Their first teleconference with the students was on January 23rd in Asnuntuck’s Digital Lounge. Students from Asnuntuck may travel to France in late spring or summer of 2018.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
